My illustration, ‘Highland Lighthouse Visitors’.
Our mice characters are out on a cold, snow-covered landscape, enjoying the view of Highland Lighthouse in North Truro, MA. on Cape Cod.
My great-great-great grandfather, Isaac Small, was the landowner and first lighthouse keeper of Highland Light (aka, Cape Cod Light) it was the first lighthouse on Cape Cod.
Highland Lighthouse, went into service on November 15, 1797.
Just before sunset, Lighthouse Keeper Isaac Small climbed to the top of the 45-foot octagonal wooden tower.
Keeper Small lit the fifteen Spider Lamps (open containers with wicks) fueled by whale oil.
Isaac remained lighthouse keeper for many years and later, his son, James, became the lighthouse keeper there and also his grandson was lighthouse Keeper at Highland Light as well.
This illustration features the characters in my current work-in-progress children's book,
'The Adventures of Thomas the Lighthouse Mouse'™
They will have many adventures near (and at) the Highland Lighthouse in North Truro on Cape Cod. Inspired by the families of mice creating their own stories in the woods (and houses) across the land!
