History segment ...My great-great-great grandfather, Isaac Small, was the landowner and first lighthouse keeper of Highland Light (also known as Cape Cod light) which is also the first lighthouse on Cape Cod. Highland Lighthouse, went into service nearly 224 years ago. On November 15, 1797 before sunset, Lighthouse Keeper Isaac Small climbed to the top of the 45-foot octagonal wooden tower. Keeper Small lit the fifteen Spider Lamps (open containers with wicks) fueled by whale oil. Isaac Small remained lighthouse keeper for many years and later, his son became the lighthouse keeper there and also his grandson was lighthouse Keeper at Highland Light as well.
